My guy, who is both sentimental and a slow reader, wants me to read the last one out loud for old times sake (I've read almost all the others out loud) So he's finishing #6 first.

That's so sweet. *g*

The Golden Compass in first grade? That's impressive. I love that book (then the sequel bored me so much that I ended up never reading the third one, though my sister has a copy). Also, Northern Lights is a prettier name.

My objections about big media events were more agitated at the last cycle of Star Wars films. When #1 came out, my son was five, just entering kindergarten, and really wanted to see it, since the hype was so universal. He and most of his friends spent that entire summer playing Star Wars, and they all wanted to be Anakin. I was absolutely furious at George Lucas making him such an attractive character, since I knew where he was going, and I knew how many boyish hearts would have to break as Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. I'm still a bit peeved, now that I think of it...

Oh man, that would've been heartbreaking indeed. *I* was heartbroken when the cute boy in SW I turned into the whiny teenager in SW II. (Yes, it was Phantom Menace that convinced me to see the earlier trilogy *facepalms*)
