Frak. My laptop's CD-burner finally gave up. I knew this would happen, and I've been dithering with the repairs, and today it refuses to burn a single thing.

Tomorrow, I talk to the Lenovo dealers. But meanwhile, because I absolutely refuse to use pen drives (sorry, too many bad experiences with *other* people's pen drives), I have to type up an entire frakking fic all over again. And I have to do it today, because it's for the [livejournal.com profile] hmd_rareathon and the date of submission is the 11th. Which is today. *headdesk*

Can't you just e-mail yourself the fic so you don't have to re-type?

Alas, no internets on the laptop! It had been a good decision back then, because internet connection + laptop = Swatkat fails at Education, but right now I have to suffer for it. :( I suppose I could try to install it, but somehow typing seemed easier. (I got it done! *g*)

A vocabulary question -- is a "pen drive" the same thing that we usually call a "thumb drive" or a "flash drive" (portable memory, plugs into usb port, has more memory than my first two computers put together and costs about as much as a decent lunch in a place with good paper napkins)?

Yes, a flash drive. These days it's pretty cheap, actually. In a way.*g* It's handy, but EXTREMELY virus-prone.

All the kids at my son's school have them, to haul their work from the computer that you're writing on to the computer with a printer hooked up (which is never the one you're writing on...) I can't tell you the number of kids who've told me they can't give me their work because they accidentally washed their thumb drive.

Those kids and everyone else in the world. I don't care how old-fashioned it makes me, I just love my computer(s) more.
