Keep watching, keep watching. You have to give the mytharc a chance, I won't have it otherwise. *clings*
I'm not quite sure which way this one is headed.
A bit of both? Because the mad science is cracky and campy, and the show is constantly making fun of itself while using ludicrous plot devices that can only be equated with Seeker's Powerful Magic. I'm sure you've heard of the famous musical episode (and if you haven't, you can look at the pretty here), which is nothing but the show making fun of its own insanity while simultaneously building up plot (and how!). On the other hand, however, it does take itself seriously, because the themes it deals with are serious - at the heart of it is Olivia and her quest to find the right answers; Walter, and his journey to rediscover pieces of himself and take responsibility for his actions. It's downright sombre, and it can't be any other way, because it's about tragedy and loss, responsibility and growing up. Season two in particular delves deeper into some really tricky moral issues, and the finale left us in a delicious lurch, which, I assume, is going to get trickier in S3. I simply cannot wait!
I never watched Lost beyond the first season, but I remember my principal issue with the show being Jack (who came across as whiny), and a failure to really fall for any of the characters. Olivia, however, is the anti-thesis of whiny - she's incredibly stoic, and just goes on, which is a character trait I can't resist. As I said, give it a chance. You'll probably like it.
