Because for all his niceness, he's utterly ruthless and far less simple than he appears. From memory, he's already showing signs of that in MAA. He's a brilliant character, but ooh, scary.
I didn't like Angua much the first time I read MAA, but I love her now... started to take to her in Feet of Clay, I think. Vimes I adore beyond reason.
Oh yes, he *is* ruthless, in a way only very well-meaning and honest men can be. It actually reminds me of Hermione sometimes (of course, they are very different characters) - Hermione sending Umbridge off to the centaurs, for instance. I find it fascinating.
I actually read Feet of Clay first, and there's no way I wouldn't have fallen for Angua - she's awesome. *g* And is it even possible not to like Vimes?
