Things That Made Me Squee
Jan. 5th, 2008 03:52 pmI was feeling down – a combination of medication + plagiarising asses + general things + the fact that I return to the university tomorrow (I'm kicking myself for letting the boys talk me into travelling with them, by *train* - not the good one, but one that leaves at an ungodly hour and is just generally terrible. and apparently I'm still not beyond feeling stupidly homesick. also, it will be cold there. argh). So I made up a meme of my own, which I will call the Things That Made Me Squee meme.
House S4: Top Three Episodes
1. 97 Seconds - That Scene. Of course. But that's not the real reason this is episode is number one on my list. It's #1 because of the way Cuddy said, 'You hired her. You're responsible' to House in the end. The entire conversation – her expression, somewhere between anger and reproach and resignation… aflkalgjlal; And it's #1 because of Wilson's reaction after House wakes up, 'You're an idiot.' Because of the theme being explored, because of the patient(s), because of Thirteen and Alanis Morisette playing in the background.
2. Alone - Do you have to ask? House and Wilson and Cuddy, kidnapped guitars and erased TiVos and The Weird Night Janitor Who Wears His Pants Backwards.
3. You Don't Want To Know - This was actually a difficult choice, because Ugly was another contender, but ultimately it wins because of Amber, who is made of awesome. Oh Cuddy, you lost a potential evil minion when you voted her out! (We are disregarding the gender issues, the lazy writing and Cuddy Ex Machina, yes we are. For this squee post, anyway.)
I have enjoyed S4 so far, despite missing the Ducklings immensely. I can understand why some people have been put off by it, but I've realised that my approach to shows is very different from most fen. I'm willing to give almost anything the writers want to do a chance before deciding whether I like it or not. There are flaws to pick of course, but it doesn't matter to me – this show makes me squee and that's good enough for me.
Pushing Daisies
Can't. Pick. Episodes. So I have Top Five moments instead:
1. Aunt Vivian singing 'Morning Has Broken.'
2. Emerson knitting.
3. Emerson doing his Chuck-voice.
4. Olive telling Aunt Vivian to make a little birdhouse in her soul.
5. Olive asking Chuck to come in for a slice of pie even though they're not in that stage of their friendship.
6. Aunt Lily hugging Baby!Ned when she learns his mother has died.
Okay, that's six. I've left out Ned and Chuck altogether. Had I but space enough and time!
I don't know how long they'll be able to keep this awesomeness up, but as of now, I'm a fan.
BSG S1: Top Three Episodes
1. Kobol's Last Gleaming I: The opening sequence. Helo shooting Boomer but not killing her. Lee and Kara, and their conversation after Lee learns about Starbuck's 'hare-brained plan' through Tigh (because it did what 11 episodes could not do – sell me Kara/Lee). Roslin's increasing craaaziness. Baltar showing character development. Galactica!Sharon. Kara and Adama – her faith in him, her despair on learning that he has lied, his expression after she jumps. Kara's general awesomeness.
2. Kobol's Last Gleaming II: SHARON OMG. Kara vs. Six, and Kara meeting Helo in Caprica (how wonderfully neat). Roslin vs. Adama.
3. Epside 8, whatsitsname: Leoben. The entire issue of faith and doubt. Kara.
How is this show so good?
jaybee65 has been telling me about it for ages, and it deserves every bit of the praise. Of course, I'll get to watch the next episodes in May, which is sad (I'll live with it). Kara is simply *awesome*, but so is everyone and everything else.
Various Other Things
1. My flist.
2. The Devil Wears Prada. I love Miranda and I love Miranda/Andy, and the fandom is a lovely little place.
3. Terry Pratchett. I read Lords and Ladies and Making Money and re-read Thief of Time, and tried to read The Last Continent again because of my newfound love for Ridcully.
4.
yuletide.
5. Anne Rice, for her endless batshittery.

Date: 2008-01-05 07:44 pm (UTC)I like Kara/Lee now, although I'm not sure if anyone else sees it the way I do. They're very incestous, in a way - competing for Daddy's attention, and all the playfulness and sibling rivalry over who's a better pilot (which is also *professional* rivalry, and that makes it all the more interesting). It's a reading that might be a turn-off to some people, but it's quite the opposite for me. Does that even make sense?
I also find it deeply amusing that BSG fen like Kara more than they like Lee. I don't think I've ever seen the female of the het OTP getting so much love (she, of course, deserves every bit of it).

Date: 2008-01-05 09:45 pm (UTC)As for House, I'm not a shipper, and I like all the characters, and so I'm pretty much willing to let the writers try to mix things up and keep the show fresh, which I think this season did quite well. I'm kind of annoyed that TPTB obviously are following some sort of formula/quota system for the composition of the fellows (one female, one person of color, one white guy; God forbid they have, say, two female fellows because that would be OMGtoomanywomen!, which meant that people had to choose between rooting for Amber or Thirteen because everyone knew there was only one female slot, which in turn meant that if you liked one you started resenting the other for reasons that had nothing to do with the characters).
I actually enjoyed the Tritter arc (like you, overlooking lazy writing issues), but that might be in large part because Tritter chewed his gum malevolently which I just thought was awesome. And whoa, their interactions were so very slashy. In a sort of horrible but fascinating way.
I didn't care for Pushing Daisies, but TDWP is next up and I'm very optimistic about that!
