Today is Jules Verne's 100th death centenary. I don't think I can quite explain how *much* I was influenced by his writings in my childhood. I wanted a Nautilus of my own and travel round the world by sea (and underwater, even. and see Atlantis!), I wanted to be marooned in a lonely island in the Pacific with my friends, I wanted to travel Africa by a balloon... I still do. Reading Verne (and Wells, to a certain extent. but mostly Verne) ruined modern SF for me in a way - I could never quite adjust to the... constricted (I'm not sure that's the right word) universes presented in the modern day SF stories.
Today is also Idiot Sister's birthday. She was looking at me appealingly - but since I've already bought her her present (three months ago, "*please* can I have this?"), I see no reason whatsoever buying her *another* present. *g*

Also, I'll be away for the weekend, so I might not be able to reply to comments and e-mails. Hope you all have a lovely weekend!
