Is September 19 a confirmed date? That's two days before the House premiere, which is a good thing, because Leverage goes off this week and I will need something adorable to cheer me up when House is depressing as usual.
On a less cheerful note, though, my illusion about the Merlin fandom being a relatively multi-shippy, female character friendly place was, as I've discovered today, well, an illusion. Proof? This (spoiler-y, although I'm not sure why this requires spoiler warnings, but anyway) post at
fandomsecrets, #121. If you ask me I will probably lean more towards the slash ships than the het ships in this show, but Arthur/Gwen as 'filth', really? REALLY? I just... FAIL. SO MUCH FAIL.
Also illuminating were the comments to the #121 thread, where there were shippers who appeared to believe that 'they have changed everything about the 'verse, so Gwen/Arthur doesn't have to happen and Merlin and Arthur will live happily ever after'. Which, you know, is stupid, because yes, they have changed things about the characters and given them different backstories, and we have no idea what they'll do to the legend - but one thing that is certain from the first series is that the writers know their legends, and they are going to keep the main elements of the legend while putting their own twists to them. It's all there: hints of Morgan Le Fay, Mordred vs. Arthur, Gwen/Lancelot, Arthur/Lancelot, Morgana's possibly maternal feelings towards Mordred... We don't know how any of it will turn out, but since Arthur and Guinevere make up a significant aspect of the legends, I don't know why they will not want to deal with that. In fact, I have a sneaking suspicion that they've made Morgana Uther's 'ward' just so they can have Arthur/Morgana in some way, without getting all those incest-related complications in a family show. Which means that they might set Gwen and Morgana against each other over Arthur... No wait, that's just wrong, that BETTER not happen.
But yeah, so my illusion? Was just an illusion, and this is freaking depressing. All fandoms are exactly the same, and I now have to follow my old policy of staying away from the main ship comms, staying away from the vehement shippers and searching out kindred spirits and sticking to my flist. At least I'm experienced at this kind of thing? Oh well.
