I don't get RPS. I doubt I ever will. And domlijah? I have no words. Every time I visit dl_anon I'm reduced to thinking, "Why? Why? What's the point in all this?"

I found this thread in dl_anon today, and it is really very interesting. It has some very insightful thoughts on why the domlijah people act the way they do. There are comments from ex-believers describing their experiences. There's even a staunch domlijah and MsA follower who posts her POV logically and without being wanky (omgtehomophobes!!!1!11).

I still think they are pretty scary people. But I liked this discussion.

RPF and RPS hasn't sucked me in; but having, in my adolescene (and a bit beyond to be honest *g*) a few favorite fantasies about how I would meet a RL celebrity I admired and they would like me and life would be so cool. Of course, I did usually take the time to become someone different myself in those fantasies, so as to increase the likelihood of the celebrity in question liking me...LOL!

If the 'net had existed, I probably would have found and read the relevant RPF/S .... and as with fanfic, might even in time have written some.

So - while my first reaction to the whole idea was EWWWWW! - upon reflection, I've had to admit that I'm not necessarily immune to it's appeal.

Now I can't imagine really getting into it - because, you know - celebrities aren't like characters in a book/TV Series/movie; we don't know very much about them, really, so RPF/S is mostly - it seems to me - original fiction borrowing the names and (without question in most cases) hot bods of people in the public eye.

And the original fic in question doesn't hold much appeal to me - (having checked out a few domlijahs after stumbling across DL_Anon and thinking it was the funiest, bizzarest thing I've found yet...) seeing as how the bulk of it seems to be bad slash PWP which falls into the worst slash tropes of excessively femming one of the guys while butching up the other - or it is just a sex scene or two - which, without caring for the people involved, often just came across like bad porn.

The obsession with celebrities - and thinking you really 'know' them - is definitely weird. And seeing all relationships as ultimately sexual is also icky - if you ask me. But then, I'm not a Frodo/Sam shipper either. Having always thought Frodo was a very dull stick, I have trouble (well - it is impossible for me, really, especially in book-verse) imagining anyone getting too worked up over the guy.

Don't we all have those fantasies? I certainly had mine, imaginative gal that I was. *g*

From the little bit I've seen of the RPF (and that's not much - I couldn't read much of that stuff), most of them are written by fangirls/boys imagining how wonderful it would be to meet HIM and putting down their fantasies on paper.

RPS is on the other hand more like, "Wouldn't it be hot if we slashed that person with that person?" And so, smut. It's a lot similar to the random slash pairings, "Wouldn't it be hot if we slashed Snape with Harry?" and so on, only here it's with real people. Most of them are like you said, slash PWPs. Because I don't see the appeal in slash, it is all beyond me.

The domlijahs (and the vigorlis and so on) take everything to a new level. People who are writing RPS know that it's just ... not true. But this... *rolls eyes*

Having always thought Frodo was a very dull stick, I have trouble (well - it is impossible for me, really, especially in book-verse) imagining anyone getting too worked up over the guy.

Frankly, I don't find Elijah Wood too hot either. But it's probably just me.

LOL! I have a personal rule about not getting the hots for men whose hips are significantly smaller than mine....just saying.

Slash - there are some slash stories, especially in StarTrek or other nearly all male story'verses, that I think are really fun romances, some are even interesting explorations of what it is to love a man in cultures that generally don't embrace that very much. Buffy slash also entertains me - because the vamps are so sort of omni-sexual.

But other slash - were there *are* canon het pairings - irritates me, because at some level it seems like a rejection of creating/writing the strong female characters. Like in Farscape - having John Crichton fall in love with anyone not-Ayren Sun. Umm - hello? The guy was in love with her the whole series. Consciously, knowingly head over heals in love with her.

I would generally agree with you on that. But only a couple of days ago I read an unbelievably well-written James Potter/Snape fic, although I *know* that James loves Lily and they get married and have a son blah blah blah. I guess there can be excpetions when the fic is that well-written.
