Today is Jules Verne's 100th death centenary. I don't think I can quite explain how *much* I was influenced by his writings in my childhood. I wanted a Nautilus of my own and travel round the world by sea (and underwater, even. and see Atlantis!), I wanted to be marooned in a lonely island in the Pacific with my friends, I wanted to travel Africa by a balloon... I still do. Reading Verne (and Wells, to a certain extent. but mostly Verne) ruined modern SF for me in a way - I could never quite adjust to the... constricted (I'm not sure that's the right word) universes presented in the modern day SF stories.

Today is also Idiot Sister's birthday. She was looking at me appealingly - but since I've already bought her her present (three months ago, "*please* can I have this?"), I see no reason whatsoever buying her *another* present. *g*

Also, I'll be away for the weekend, so I might not be able to reply to comments and e-mails. Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

I used to love Jules Verne, even though I never read 2000 Miles. But The Children of Captain Grant (if that's the correct English title) and Mysterious Island were among my favourite and most frequently re-read books. I wanted to go on a travel around the world, too, and rescue poor Captain Grant.

oh!

Jules Verne! I loved him when I was growing up. But he actually had a positive influence on my enjoyment of Sci Fi because I'm sure he helped me see you could bring imagination to anything. 100 years...wow!

Hope the weekend away was enjoyable. I had 3 days at *my* sister's and surprisingly, I'm feeling quite relaxed. heh...
