swatkat: (the good wife: kalinda wins)

Alicia doesn't feel about Kalinda the way Kalinda does about her, because I don't think she can. There's a part of Kalinda - bundle of contradictions that she is - that's just deeply... old-fashioned, for the lack of a better word. Her storyline has been playing out this season in a manner very similar to that eternally popular trope in fanfiction, where the stoic woobie just loves from a distance and continues to be the Knight in Shining Armour in a deeply stoic fashion, while never demanding credit or asking to be acknowledged. That storyline usually ends in the object of their affection finally taking notice and ~showing their appreciation - I cannot say it will end here the same way, if Alicia will ever realize the depth of Kalinda's devotion, but surely she will have to see something, once people finally start telling Alicia about the things they're doing behind her back? She saw some of it when she learned about Kalinda finding Grace, which is what prompted the car scene.

I don't know what she'll do with it, but I would argue that just because Alicia can't love Kalinda, or anyone, with that single-minded Medieval chivalric devotion that Kalinda is capable of, doesn't mean that she doesn't love Kalinda or isn't protective of her - the absolutely fierce way she went at Cary was an instinctive, stay away from my person response, and it was clearly meant to echo the season two episode where Kalinda asks Alicia to keep her out of jail. What I took away from that episode was very simply (if somewhat sentimentally) that Alicia still considers it her responsibility to keep Kalinda out of jail. But while Kalinda is good at processing how she feels but not very good at expressing it, Alicia is the very opposite - in season two, Owen had to talk her into processing and acknowledging that she was perhaps in love with Will. In the episode where she ends up drinking with Diane, Alicia again has to go through the motions to come to the conclusion that she doesn't have friends, while dancing around the actual problem - her relationship with Kalinda. So when will she realise what Kalinda is to her? Will she ever? I don't really know, but a girl can hope!

[Er, I hope this makes sense, my brain isn't functioning very well at the moment.]
