Yes, one of the many reasons why I keep going back to cheesy fantasy like OUAT is the way good vs. evil plays out in grand, melodramatic scales. TGW OTOH delights in taking smart, sophisticated characters and have them involved in the worst sort of ugliness that hits, as you say, very close to home, making us squirm. No one is exempt - not even Alicia in her moments of 'fall'.

This made me giggle, because it's such a perfect encapsulation of her. It's a great credit to the writing and acting on TGW that I adore Alicia the way I do; I am not sure I would find watching her in real life particulary compelling...

Hee, yes - although I admit I do enjoy narratives about a straightforward protagonist's ethical dilemmas. But Alicia is a combination of a lot of things that should be very difficult to portray on television - withdrawn, reserved, with no particularly exciting or 'dramatic' flaws, with an annoying tendency to expect the right thing - and yet, I find myself entranced by her struggle. Kudos to the writers, and to JM especially for the way she is a stellar performer in every single episode!
