I have been super impressed by the five (or was it six?) episodes of Korra S3 I've caught so far, not in the least because they seem to have not lost their pacing after picking up magnificently mid-S2 and taking the mytharc to epic AtLA-worthy levels in the S2 finale. More than ever, it feels like an organic extension of the Avatar 'verse - does, in fact, make it richer in its exploration of the lives of our heroes after the war, as grown ups, in which war heroes Aang and Toph are allowed to turn out to be less-than-stellar parents; their massive statues everywhere a contrast to the utterly human fashion in which they often failed their children. Needless to say, I lapped up the Beifong family drama with a spoon, and am excited about the prospect of meeting world-travelling Toph at some point alongside old man Zuko.

The decision to cut out teenage romance was an excellent move, as was allowing Korra and Asami to truly befriend each other while Mako is at once awkward!fumble!ex and an excellent policeman in the making.

I'm also excited about the Airbender plot - Korra's actions last season should have lasting material changes upon their world, and it's amazing to witness Airbending like this, as an actual weapon in the hands of the unfortunately named Zaheer (a terrorist type convinced of his righteousness with a distinctly Islamic name, really?) and a potential weapon in the hands of the Earth Queen, not to mention Jinora's astonishing connection with the Spirit World. There's so much the world doesn't know about Airbending. Tenzin's spluttering and flailing, apart from being a character trait, has an actual purpose - he's the leader of a culture wiped out by genocide, bearing the burden of centuries of history and culture. But Airbending in practice is still a skill largely unexplored, its potential lost with time and history beyond what Aang was able to revive on his own. And in many ways that's what we're witnessing here, with Jinora, with Kai, with Zaheer.

So far, my only complaint seems to be NEEDS MORE CHIEF SOKKA. But that's always my complaint.
