The Comrade sent me a text message to inform that he (along with everyone else who was with him in a particular protest demonstration at the Parliament Street) has been arrested. I've never seen anyone be so happy about being arrested.

They are currently demanding immediate feeding.

Students politics > Work.

What were they protesting? (and was this in Cal?)

Nope. Right here in Delhi, at the India Gate. Er, I don't know how much you know about the Lyngdoh commission report on student elections in universities - the report came out some time last year and sets out to 'restore the glory of student politics' and free it from corruption (I think they had the DUSU elections in mind). It suggests various guidelines re. student representatives (age limit, minimum attendance etc.) which had earlier rubbed the student community over here the wrong way (because, well, none of those things actually make sense with us - and, more importantly, only students can decide who will represent them). A few days ago, some moron (who happens to be the Additional Solicitor General, I think) filed a case at the Supreme Court, which thereafter stayed the university elections. This lead to HUGE uproar, leading to an extraordinary all-party coalition (except, very predictably, the Youth For Equality) and a lot of drama. Today was supposed to be election day, so the coalition staged the aforementioned demo at Rajpath. Hence - arrest. (They've let them go at this point, I think.)

Oh, how exciting! A student badge of honor, that is. *g*

There were about 700 students, and they really harassed the poor policemen. And now the Comrade won't stop talking about it. *g*

And, eep, if I didn't have work, I would've been at the demo, too. I've had my picture come out in the newspaper before (which in itself was freaky, because I only stay in the fringes of politics, going to demos only when I really feel about them), but this would've been new. Although I don't know how I would've explained the 'arrested' part to my mother.
