You already know what I'm going to say: THEY WROTE AN EPISODE FOR MEEEEEEE! ♥♥♥
9 to 5, for service and devotion
It's a bit hard for me to gather my thoughts right now, especially since the episode had less to do with the season's over-arching story (though the elements are there—most notably, House's massage; his leg is hurting) and was more about showcasing Lisa Edelstein and Cuddy's Dragon-slaying Skillz of Awesome. Filler, if you will, but a very entertaining one (the folks at
house_wilson and HHoW don't think so; but OTOH
house_cuddy has 1400+ comments in the episode reaction post, heh). Possibly laying the groundwork for whatever happens to House and Cuddy later this season, and—I like to think—something like a reward for all of us Cuddy fans who are used to her appearing for two minutes in every episode. The resolution of the insurance plot was unrealistic, and the 'Yes!' in the hallway over the top, emotionally charged as the moment was, but it did leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
More problematic are her interactions with Lucas, in the sense that I don't know what to make of them. I like that he tries to look out for her in his own way, and bringing her lunch + the bugged flower is A Good Thing. What is less fun is that he blabbed about their sex life to House (his blabbing was cute when he wasn't dating Cuddy) and placed bets about it and then became overexcited when he ended up winning the bet. They also seem to not have discussed the events of the previous episode. Meanwhile, Lucas male bonding with House again, right after his little understanding with House and Wilson about not bringing up the apartment or the pranks after their 'mine is bigger' contest (initiated by Lucas), makes me uneasy. And taking away her line of communication with the nanny when Rachel was ill left a bad taste in my mouth.
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
On the other hand, House and Cuddy's interactions were made of love, and they're honestly scaring me a bit with their directness this season. It was fun seeing him randomly pop up where Cuddy least expects him to, with wisecracks and insanity and some genuine concern. His cases, again, are incredibly odd from a third person POV—although I wish there were funnier scenes with the team like in Wilson ('It wasn't the tennis!'). And House might be the overtly needy one in their relationship, but Cuddy does need him, as was beautifully demonstrated in a lot of scenes, especially the car scene. The quietness in that scene is a sharp contrast to the insane pace of the rest of the episode, almost soothing. And their conversation, beginning with admissions of truth (House helped the breast-milk guy; continuity from the previous episode, oh my) and going on to:
'They're not gonna fire you, and you're not gonna quit.'
'Why not?'
'Because you're an idiot. This place needs you. That matters to you.'
Which of course reminded me of 'Humpty Dumpty' and the 'You see the world as it is and you see the world as it could be' conversation. ♥♥♥
It was also nice to see Cuddy lean on Wilson again. Their weird co-dependence—weirder than House and Wilson, or House and Cuddy—kills me. I loved Wilson's dry humour ('They might fire you.') and the little bit of insight into how he sees House.
Workin 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin
+ 'It's 7.37.' HOTTEST. LINE. EVER. *fans self*
+ THE HEELS.
+ Foreman from Cuddy's POV is sane and competent. It's why she likes him, no matter how much she enjoys grinding him underneath her heels.
+ The surgeon fight was just… WTF?
+ I kind of liked the sociopath. I don't want to know what that says of me.
+ Regina is made of awesome, and I loved the high-five. *g*
+ That said, Cuddy, she's right: HIRE AN ASSISTANT. But no, she has to do everything herself and lump the rest on competent employees.
+ Cuddy would not write the breast-milk guy a prescription, but House did. Who's the secret softie again? *g*
+ I liked that they pointed out that coddling House does undermine her authority in the hospital. But on the other hand, House is a huge bargaining chip for her—we've always known this, right from the pilot, and it was nice to see it being used again in the scene where she walks up to the CEO.
+ Patronisation UGH. And of course everyone calls her a 'bitch'.
+ THE SCENE IN THE STAIRWELL? KILLED ME.
+ Fandom has very odd notions about working mothers.
+ LISA CUDDY, (METAPHORICAL) DRAGON-SLAYER EXTRAORDINAIRE, KNIGHT IN SHINING HIGH HEELS.

zulu is very eloquent here in her last paragraph.

Date: 2010-02-09 04:38 pm (UTC)Yes, absolutely. House, professionally, is a huge bargaining chip for her, as we saw again in this episode when she was speaking to the CEO. Diagnostics is important. But House is even more important to her personally, because she needs his support. In many ways, this episode comes full circle from last season's Lucky Thirteen/Joy, when Cuddy desperately needed House's support in her decision to adopt Joy and the fallout afterward. House tried to be supportive in both Joy and Joy to the World - in Joy, it was a bit too late, and in the second one Cuddy wasn't listening. And then we come to this season, and Wilson's comment on House being a good friend. House was, in his way, a good friend to Cuddy in this one, and she needs that in her life.
