The Sister dragged me to watch Alice in Wonderland, and I'm very glad she did. We didn't watch it in 3D, but it was quite wonderful anyway, with fantastic cinematography and some very good performances by Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter. It has been very heavily marketed here as a Johnny Depp film, but I didn't think there was much to be said for his performance: his accent was horrendous, he made many wonderful faces and did the crazy eyes... I think he can do roles like this in his sleep now, so.
Mia Wasikowska, especially, was fantastic. I started grinning when she said, 'This is my dream,' which only grew wider with 'Lost my muchness, have I?', and then, of course: 'Six: I can slay the Jabberwock.' ♥
Movies with positive messages for girls, what is the world coming to?
I ADORED the Cheshire Cat and Bayard the Dog and Rickman!Caterpillar and the Dormouse and the March Hare andand...
I wish I had caps of that gorgeous kurta-ish thing Alice wore in the White Queen's palace. I'm not sure why she was wearing that - was it meant to be exotic? sorry, Tim Burton, but we actually wear clothes like that - but it was pretty and I want it.
The ending, for me, was far more bittersweet than Burton probably intended, because what is Alice's empowerment? Becoming a fabulous merchant who dreams BIG - that of trading with China - and embracing the spirit of ADVENTURE and ENDEAVOUR and whatever, just like her father. Why am I not surprised? *sigh*
That said, I hope it makes a lot of money so that Disney realises that yes, people *are* interested in watching films that have girls in them, even young boys, no really.
PS: Pity the Orientalist by
