superman wished for a happy ending
Feb. 23rd, 2011 06:04 pmI'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this episode. The case, OMG, it hit ALLLLL my comic book-loving buttons so hard. Two souls who longed for each other so very much that they tore the fabric of the multiverse itself, and Our Heroes had to teach them a lesson in Letting Go at the very last moment to ~save the universe~! It's straight out of a Grant Morrison comic book, with self-aware ideas and Anti-life Equations and Miracle Machines and Superman wishing for a happy ending (shutup, I like Final Crisis). This is really what I love best about Fringe - no, second best, the best is Olivia - silly comic book skience, nonsensical pseudo-scientific explanations and profound emotional impact.
It's also interesting that we have discussed 'letting go' twice in a row now - first in the Observer episode, and now here. Walter, letting go of Peter. Because that's what brought all of this about, isn't it? Walter's inability to let his son go. It's as though the plot is slowly, irrevocably preparing him to be able to let Peter go when the time comes. I now wonder if the story won't end with Peter and Olivia in two different universes.
Walter's anguish was magnificent, and seriously, why does this man not have all the awards in the universe? As was Nina's support of him, I really love the dynamic they're building up here.
And last, but not the least - Peter/Olivia. I still don't get the ship, or why Olivia likes him so much, or if we are supposed to believe that Peter really does not feel anything for Fauxlivia, or what we are supposed to do with SERIAL-KILLER!PETER, or why we must have the pregnancy plotline. I don't get any of these things, but I simply can't resist it when Olivia smiles like that.
(I feel like I have lot more to say about Olivia in this episode, especially her thoughts on vulnerability and being broken - I think I'm going to have to write a post on this, hmm.)
PS: ALL ABOUT ~FEEEELINGS! CARA WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY ON THAT, I'M SURE.
