"I'm melting! Melting!"

This is serial-killer-making weather. Dear rain gods, please make this stop. Can it be October already?
1. Morning Glories is one of the most disturbing comic books I've ever read (not that I'm very well-versed in comics outside the Big Two), but also good and strangely addictive. I keep thinking Casey is Steph (damn you, Morrison, for giving us that glimpse of AWESOME *weeps*), but I like her even if she's not-Steph. Also, adorable Hisao/Guillaume is adorable. I was shipping Hisao (Hisao-as-Jun that is) with Hunter for a while there, so it was an utter delight to see some of it become canon.
2. I thoroughly enjoyed WW #11. Azzarello's cast of characters can be dizzying at times (here we have Demeter and Artemis, two new gods), but the stakes right now are very, very high and it seems we're finally about to get some answers.
I loved that Diana went up against a god and lost, and is still up to the task of challenging Hera in her own home (remember, Hera destroyed Diana's). I don't know what she's planning, but as Diana has shown in this arc, time and again, she's willing to use her brains against opponents who are physically stronger and prone to underestimating her.
I do think Strife is rather attached to Diana, which makes her a very interesting unknown element in Diana's battle against Hera. Of course, she's also completely untrustworthy, but that's why we love her. I would happily read an entire book about Strife tormenting Diana - she's unhinged and unpredictable and Diana is steadfast and glorious, and together they would be so much fun. (Drawn by Chiang, obviously, because no one draws exasperated Diana the way Chiang draws her.)
Cliff Chiang, sir, I missed you so much. NEVER LEAVE US! I cannot believe the folks over at CBR who are arguing that Jim Lee is so much better. I mean, yes, art is subjective but come on - Lee has nice, clean pencils, but his women have the same face and his Diana's top is close to falling off in every single panel!
3. I'm really enjoying the new BoP. I miss the old team so much it hurts, and I found the conclusion to the earlier arc rather lacklustre, but Duane Swierczynski gets a few things right, like team dynamics and character moments, and that's what make it work for me. I mean, how can you not love the fact that the Birds of Prey are now green crusaders at the behest of Poison Ivy? IDK guys, just the very thought of Ivy taking over the team and making them do what she wants is HILARIOUS. And also heartbreaking, because Ivy. She hoped she wouldn't need that sort of extreme convincing, but they don't care about her cause and think she's crazy and evil… except that she is unhinged in the way she goes about her agenda even though her cause is completely sympathetic.
There's something about the way the Birds never seem to catch a break in this new run that just warms my heart. There's a 'ragtag bunch of warriors' feel to the team, and it just works for me. The fill-in art was disappointing, however.
I actually enjoy Barbara more in this book than in Batgirl. I mean, Batgirl #11 was a good, if occasionally bizarre, issue. I was enjoying the Babs-McKenna interaction a lot, but the sudden turn on McKenna's part made me do a double take - the writing was confusing in there. Charise is an interesting villain, though frankly her story is made much more interesting by her interaction with McKenna. The James sub-plot gave me the creeps. BUT. I'm still not convinced by Simone's Barbara voice here, as much as I hate to say it. Gail Simone knows her Barbara and Gail Simone knows how to write good dialogue, but so far it seems she's struggling to find the right voice for her.
I am also unimpressed with the art. I like Benes (even if he has a pornypose sameface problem), so maybe it'll be a little better with the next issue, but the colors really have to improve. It makes things look cluttered, as opposed to the nice, clean feel of Wonder Woman or Batman. Give Gail a better colorist, DC!
However, I can't wait for Babs and Kate to finally meet. Maybe THIS is where things will really pick up.
