It's been five days since HBP. Five days. And fandom has already gone from hysteria to insanity to accusations of plagiarism and homophobia to sickening shipwars (as opposed to the normal lunatic ones) and classy diatribes against werewolf-stealers. Man.

I am, however, saving this F_W link for posterity.

Also, why am I seeing question marks instead of alphabets in the LJ frontpage????? (they're sort of like this)

I do love that I haven't yet read it. It's so the way to avoid the idiocy. (Well, that and not really being part of the fandom...)

Oh, do read the book. Ignore the fandom crazies - most of us loved the book. *g*

Times like this are when I love being a genficcer and a minor character maven. Instead of getting all overwrought, I can just sit back and laugh at the wank. And drool over Blaise, of course :-).

I read the books in order to not be left out of every conversation ever for the next two months. Also so that I can validly criticise the books *g* (~shrugs~ I have an honours degree in children's lit - I can't read the stuff without criticising to some extent.)

Heh, good point.

Criticism is always good. I'll look forward to reading your opinions on it - while I can crit them in general (when I'm over being fangirly), I would certainly love to read some criticism with respect to the series' genre.

And I love everything, so whatever JKR writes is okay with me. *g*

Blaise *is* awesome - he's so pretty and cool and vain in a very Slytherin way. *g*

I confess

I'm enjoying the fandom crazies. It's like a circus with a million different acts going on simultaneously, and I'm rushing back and forth excitedly to watch as many as I can!

But then I'm a fan of the fandom instead of the source material, so it's like a marathon airing of a television series to me: I can't stop watching no matter how tired I get, because I *must* know what happens next!

it is indeed a freeway wreck

but all the "word, word, word" entries are giving me a headache. I'm going to take a rest, and come back later.

oh totally, totally with you there -

I keep hitting my refresh buttons on F-W just to see where they're going next.

I've even enjoyed some of the essays that didn't seem all that wanky, really, to me - other than the fact that they are hardline pro/con on something that I think is pretty muddy (well - me and obviously lots of others). Like the one about how horrid the Weasley twins are.

What I'd love to see is a really good essay about how utterly horrid and violent the entire HP universe is. There is no *normal* or *sensibly safe* there, at all. I mean - Harry slept in a closet under the stairs for 11 years - and no one seems all that impressed by that. Even Harry. In that context - the twins aren't really standouts, other than the fact that they appear far more talented than many (most?). IMO - but still, enjoyed the essay if only for the opportunity to think that. Again. *sheepish grin*

He wasn't around much, but Percy fen say (http://www.livejournal.com/users/icarusancalion/389626.html#cutid6) we should see more of him in Book 7. *g*

Oh yes

I read the Weasley twins essay and it didn't seem especially wanky to me, either. Expressing a strong opinion about fannish issues is not the same thing as wanking, IMO. But at this point I think the fandom insanity has created a giant vortex that sucks up wank and non-wank without much of an attempt to distinguish between the two.

I'm enjoying the crazy, but the nasty is getting to me. I'm also a bit worried as to how JKR will react if she gets a whiff of the assasination warnings and "JKR is a traitor" etc stuff, seeing that she's been so nice to us. Yes, I like her, I do. *sigh*

There *have* been discussions regarding this in the past (I mean, the wizards go around *armed* all the time - you couldn't get anymore paranoid than that). I'll try to dig up some links for you.

I hope she's got good advisers who have been working to make sure they are all ready for the tsunami - I mean, you can't sell 6 million books in a weekend and expect that every single person who buys it will be sane about it.

Of course the extent of the cra-zee has stunned me a bit.

I mean - WTF is up with the slashers who seem to have seriously believed that JKR was writing openly gay characters in Sirius and Remus??? And are now furious to learn that she never was?

No kidding - although - hey - I'm perfectly happy to have the giant compliation post, otherwise I'd never see the saner stuff. ;-)

I thought the joy of slash was all about subtext anyway. ;-)

So far, nothing has topped the childfree person who went to the book release party, though. Although OMGBlaiseisblack! comes pretty close.

But judging by the JKR interview people keep frothing about, she seems to be well aware of the firestorm and quite amused by it. Honestly, if I were her, I'd probably be cackling in evil glee that my own words had the power to unleash such worldwide insanity. (Well, that, alternating with rolling naked in my enormous piles of cash. LOL.)

I'd love to see some - because honestly, that's one of the things that struck me most when I finally finished the alst book - how incredibly, casully violent and careless the wizarding world is. The twins are only better at it that most......

thanks - that was fun to read.

I'm still surprised by how few people there seem to think that Percy's a spy for Dumbledore....that was my very first thought the first time we saw him in the last book. They are also all convinced that Percy's an approval hound ---- which really strikes me as more fanon than canon. ... still, interesting reading.

From: [identity profile] sk56.livejournal.com
Hadn't crossed my mind, but that's a very interesting suggestion. I don't think there's anything much in these books that isn't there on purpose -- they seem very thoroughly plotted out to me, so if Percy is still around, something's up.

Even more stupid - how on EARTH is the ship supposed to have survived in canon (assuming it *was* canon, as the crazies say) after Sirius Black DIED? And why is it wrong for Remus to move on? The concept of bisexuality seems to have escaped these fen - something I hardly expect from people who calls themselves slashers.

Ah. I'm afraid the idea of bisexuality *didn't* escape them. Did you see the post by the person who was so angry at the idea of R/T that she went back and defaced all her old books to remove all evidence of Remus' name? She addressed the bisexuality issue by stating that in her mind, Sirius was allowed to be bisexual, but for Remus the idea was vile and disgusting. She couldn't explain why the double-standard, but I can make a guess: because Sirius is dead and therefore bisexuality would be strictly abstract and theoretical; whereas in Remus' case it means he might actually be contaminated by revolting girl parts!!!111

Just call me cynical, though. ;-)
