From an ongoing discussion in the TWoP boards: But when she [Cuddy] can't even give a basic introduction without stumbling, is helpless to stop House signing her name to documents or illegally experimenting on patients and just accepts his lame excuse as to why he's dropping acid at work (Distractions) or tells Cameron to ignore a possible breach of academic conduction instead of telling her to make a formal appointment to discuss it (Sleeping Dogs Lie) or breaks protocol to let an outsider take charge of a transplant committee meeting (Control)those clothes suggest maybe she slept her way into the job after all.
Bolding mine. The poster in question keeps saying this over and over again.
You will not believe how cool and rational I was in my response.
ETA: I really wanted to say 'Incompetent?' in my best pissed!Michael voice, but that wouldn't make sense to anyone but LFN fans so I gave it up.

Date: 2006-07-08 06:18 am (UTC)What that means is that a) she puts up with House for reasons of her own, including but not limited to how brilliant he is; b) that breach of academic conduction was stupid on Cameron's part and not really Cuddy's problem; c) the writers use Cuddy in lots of ways that may or may not actually pertain to her job or how well she does it; and d) the wardrobe people are on serious, serious crack. Lisa Edlestein is a beautiful woman, and Cuddy is a beautiful, professional woman, and they need to stop dressing her either as a floral nightmare or a low-cut blouse wearer.
Um. Sorry. Didn't mean to get carried away.

Date: 2006-07-08 06:52 am (UTC)Bwahaha! That's so true. I'm all for cleavage, mind you, but I often have to wince when I see her clothes, and mutter to myself, 'Who dresses this woman and what do they have against her?'
And the show actually repeatedly makes the point that sexy clothes != incompetent woman (I saw 'Kids' for the first time yesterday. love the 'funbags' discussion, lol!). It *pisses me off* when women accuse women of being a slut for being succesful and sexy.

Date: 2006-07-08 07:10 am (UTC)But at least there are people like you to go all pshomgyoufail on their insanely invalid arguements. [Cause, you know, all women in high positions who show a bit of cleavage, obviously slept with everyone they know. Puppies included. Just massive amounts of massive orgies, all to further their careers. Had nothing to do with working extremely hard, or, you know, studying and stuff. Psh. Who needs that when you've got boobies?]
I'm in a very zomg!don'ttouchmyLisa mood. Probably spawned by the fact that I just saw Say Uncle (very weird, but Lisa!) and now desperately want to marry her. ...as if i didn't before I saw the film. But really. *ded*
Sorry. I'm not making any sense. I've been Lisa!pwn'd. Kind on a one-track-track here.
Yeah.
[So, I came back from weeks away, and you know what the first thing I found was? Bad fanfic. My soul cried. So I watched Skin Deep and Forever, and was instantly revived.
Until I read more fanfic.]

Ahem.
In fact, I was having a discussion with
Just massive amounts of massive orgies
Not that I would mind reading about the said orgies. But they wouldn't be because of her career. Cuddy can have orgies *and* study and PWN all at the same time.

Date: 2006-07-09 07:01 pm (UTC)WORD.
MADE OF AWESOME and how everyone loves them even when they disagree with her actions.
I'm trying to think of an instance that I massively disagreed with Cuddy... can't say I was too thrilled with "All In" (but again, thanks to you and your fabulous take on it, I can actually watch it without twitching)... and the only other one might be "Euphoria pt 2" (which I can't remember if you've seen because I fail), but even in that instance I completly understand where she was coming from, and I think the writer's under-represented her side. One the one hand I really liked that, because it made you actually *think* about her position, and be mildly analytical, but on the other hand, people are stupid and they only absorb what you give them right out. So Cuddy took a lot of shit for that episode (a la Stacy + infarction).
/ramble.
And another WORD to the madeofawesome part. Cause she totally is. (made of awesome. and some sex thrown in for good measure).
I realised that fans who make arguments like sexy = slut are idiots and therefore do not count.
And you know what else? Cuddy's not even *that bad* - yeah, so, there's cleavage. Your point? That's what I thought. Besides, it makes male and female viewers alike immensely happy for her whole 2.36 minutes of screentime. ^^/><
Cuddy can have orgies *and* study and PWN all at the same time.
That's because our Cuddy is one fantabulisticaly awesome woman with sexy multi-tasking skillage. (woot!)
A hot threesome and a cracktastic xover that works.
Cracktastic is the best, if not the only word I can think of at the moment to describe this fic. Other than ilovedit. I really like how a wholly unrealistic crossover is twenty thousand times more believable than some of the stuff people come up that stick to the fandom. I also really like how grammatically crap that sentance was. Ouch. No matter, thank you for the glorious rec - if I ever stop being lazy, I'll write a review and link it on my recs page of doom. ^^
[Also, if you don't mind starting a potentially massive thread, I have a "analytical"!Cuddy question for you that I've been mulling over. I'd post it on a forum... but I'm afraid of the answers I'd get.]

Date: 2006-07-10 04:08 pm (UTC)Folks in the TWoP board are also complaining about 'Distractions', and Cuddy letting House get away with the experiment on the coma patient and Weber. It hasn't bothered me before, but I need to think some more on it.

Oh, word. And then complain about the ambiguity.

YES SHE IS.

Yeah. I mean, I don't *get* it. People say cleavage like it's a BAD thing. It's like idiot FIFA complaining about players taking off their shirts - you morons, we *like* it when they take off their shirts. More shirtlessness for the win. (sorry, I'm still in a very football state of mind)

That's right. She's called 'partypants' for a reason, you know.

Please, go on! You know I'm always dying to talk about Cuddy. I still have three S1 eps left, but I'm assuming that won't be a problem? And massive threads? You haven't seen the endless roundabout discussions I have with

Yeah, it doesn't bother me so much either. I guess it could, if I thought long and hard about it, but... the point is, that it's *House* and it's *TV* and if House couldn't do asinine things like inducing migranes in coma patients, it wouldn't make good TV. People love to see him be outrageous; they love seeing him get away with crap that a normal human being wouldn't get away with in a million years. Unfortunately, since Cuddy is more of a downtoearth character than he is, she takes the crap for it; she can't control him. *rolls eyes* A) she does a better job controlling him than anyone else, B) if she did control him, ratings would drop and people would become disinterested. Nobody wants to see House sit around and pet kittens. They want to see him give the kitten a headache and then fix it with LSD and painkillers.
Wow. That was longer than I expected it to be. Oops.
Oh, word. And then complain about the ambiguity.
*laughs wildly* ooh, so priceless. ^^

EXACTLY. I really don't understand it. I think it's kind of the same as the "Distractions"/Control issue - people want their reality suspended [ie, crazy lack of ethics, "lessthanappropriate" clothes for an administrator [wtf?]] and then bitch when it is.
That's right. She's called 'partypants' for a reason, you know.
I SO want to know the backstory for that. And for how House knew all about her poker skill'ages.... o.O
Please, go on! You know I'm always dying to talk about Cuddy.
... I totally forgot my original question. O.O ... it's completely gone. woosh. Oh well. Here's another one(!): Do you think Cuddy would ever really sleep with an employee (especially House)? On the one hand, with all the snark/subtext, it's like 'well... duh' but on the other hand, she's often painted as someone with pretty strict ethics, but on the other hand that doesn't seem to apply to House; and then there was the whole matter of almost asking Wilson for his swimmers, and at the same time she did go all out for both of them when it came to finally outing Vogler, but on the other hand he was destroying her hospital, her baby and we know she's willing to do anything to protect it/her job there, so, would she really risk all that to shack up with House? and if so, long term? toomuchalcohol-onenighter?
my brain hurts. you take over ;)

Date: 2006-07-19 10:35 am (UTC)Please not the kitten. Anything but the kitten. And I bet the kitten would win House over with her superior scratching and 'STFU, puny human' skillz. Or Cuddy would rescue her, because she has occasionally considered getting a cat... Okay, maybe I'm somewhat partial to kittens.
and then bitch when it is.
I know! I do wish they'd explain House's 'addiction' a little more, because right now as it stands it makes no sense whatsoever, but otherwise... In the 'real world', House wouldn't have a job in the first place. We have to accept that.
Do you think Cuddy would ever really sleep with an employee (especially House)?
The ethical issue is always there, but we have to consider it in terms of the show. Does PPTH as an organisation (and Cuddy, as the person who runs it) disapprove of employee relationships? Her treatment of House in Love Hurts seemed to suggest otherwise. She was *indulgent* - she smiled at his blouse joke, told him to wear the blue shirt that would make him look pretty and that he would do well to stick to Cameron. It was almost as if she'd stepped out of the role of his boss for a moment and was speaking as his friend, and that happens very, very rarely. And would she do that if she didn't approve of a employer/employee relationship? Probably not. Of course, there would be hell to pay if the relationship affected the said employee's professional duties.
As to herself, we know Cuddy holds herself to a standard slightly higher than other people and tries more than her best to that standard because she's a megalomaniac like that (or so House would say. Cuddy would say that some people like to live up to certain standards, and who is House to talk about megalomania anyway, considering how *he* is with his patients?). Is sleeping with an employee a strict no-no for her own self? Probably, because she can't afford to lose her power over them. So if she did end up sleeping with one of them for some reason, she would probably mentally smack herself for being unprofessional and try not to do it ever again. A long-term relationship would be even worse. But that said, Cuddy is also one hell of an adapter. She knows that the rules are more like guidelines, and she is not unwilling to bend them if the situation required it. If she were really smitten? Cuddy would probably go ahead and have that relationship. Whether the relationship would *work* is another question altogether. Would Cuddy ever get over the sense that she's doing something unprofessional? Would that other person ever get over the fact that she's the boss? Would they be able to maintain a good professional relationship?
If that employee was House? That's a different issue altogether, because House is never just an employee. I'm not saying she's in looove with House, but there is a personal element to their interactions (duh, as you said *g*). Not to mention the UST which *surely* she can't be absolutely unaware of. Would she *really* have sex with House? She probably would. She probably has (I'm indecisive on this. I like both options). With probably a lot of alcohol. Or some such similar circumstance. Would she have a *relationship* with House? I'm not sure. Because it's not just a relationship with an employee, it's a relationship with *House*. And House is, well, House. Would she be willing to risk that?
I apologise if none of this makes any sense. :p
