All right. Unfunny racewank; all hail [personal profile] zulu for being her wonderful self.

(A request, for my sanity's sake. Please don't respond to this post with 'thank god I'm out of this fandom,' or 'oh, how typical, I don't expect any better from this fandom.')

Tending to My Lady's Bath: Gorgeous, gorgeous piece of Gwen/Morgana fanart by anonymous. NSFW. The warm colours, their expressions! Just looking at it makes me happy.

A lovely Gwen/Morgana futurefic on the kink meme which should be read by more people. The author's warnings: sex, bit of an NCS edge at first, adultery.

And now I have to go out and socialize, when all I want is to curl up under a blanket. Darn cold.

Fandom is full of awesome sparkly things today.

+ So, the NAUTICAL ADVENTURE AU I mentioned yesterday? [livejournal.com profile] dealan311 made manips for it:

Pirate!Gwen being badass and disapproving (Le Fay never learns)! Le Fay, Pirate Queen, glorious and joyful with that sword in her hand! And, of course, PIRATES OF CAMELOT!

Words cannot express my love for this.

+ [livejournal.com profile] michigandreams - a House&Cuddy collegefic challenge. [personal profile] leiascully has a poll here, which you should participate in at once (despite its sad lack of tickyboxes).

+ And last, but not the least, this fantastic story at [livejournal.com profile] hp_yule_balls:

Truth Beyond by Anonymous, Minerva McGonagall/Rita Skeeter, NC-17, featuring some BDSM and some fabulous world-building and characterisations. I am seriously in awe. (Please don't forget to feed the author!)

I LOVE Doris Egan. That is all. ♥♥♥

Actually, that's not all. spoiler for the post and Known Unknowns )

Also:

techniques in skywriting
by [profile] applesred: For the [livejournal.com profile] cuddy_fest prompt: Maybe not everything is supposed to last forever. Certain things are like skywriting; like a really beautiful thing that only lasts for a couple moments. Ten little fragments about beautiful fleeting things.

The Sound of Closing Wings by [personal profile] tree: For the [livejournal.com profile] cuddy_fest prompt: Cuddy learns she has breast cancer. If the subject matter does not bother you, read this at once. It will leave you breathless.

(Don't forget to feed the authors!)

Well, clearly the universe wants me to indulge in crack!AUs (the Quidditch AU now has a magic carpet ride; it's a family heirloom, Uther keeps it hidden and that time he had to pay off people in the Ministry when they came for an inspection - little does he know that Arthur and Morgana used to sneak out for joyrides all the time when they were home in summer). First, [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu wrote On the Edge of Night, which is a ST:Reboot/House fusion AU, with House and Wilson playing Kirk and McCoy respectively, while Foreman is a Vulcan with a human mother. Also, Captain Cuddy! Ensign Cameron! Lt. Chase!

And if that wasn't enough, there was this: snails do it differently by [personal profile] mrinalinee, which is a Jurassic Park/Merlin fusion AU. Or, the one in which they're dinosaurs. Hilarious and clever, featuring Uther Rex (who is against evolution; also, he ate Gwen's raptor-father), Arthur Rex (who's slightly dim), Gwen (she's a christmas-coloured raptor thing, and she has Opinions), Merlin (who's somewhat confused) and Gaius (who's a bird). And, of course, Morgana, who kind of steals the show with her revolutionary shenanigans.

I ♥ fandom.

It's not that I'm ignoring you, flist - it's just that I've been busy. Last weekend I ran away to the hills with the gang on a whim (we were talking about going to the library - and somehow it evolved into this wonderful thing) and walked and walked and walked all over a lovely hill town (on a twisted ankle, no less). Today I went all the way to a Library Far, Far Away (okay, maybe not that far, but it sounds nice when you put it like that) and instead of doing some actual work read books about Random Historical Events That Are Really Interesting, Even If They Are Not Particularly Relevant To My Work instead. Here, have some recs instead:

* First, a very belated rec for the story I received for [profile] femslash09: Not Exactly Human by [personal profile] netgirl_y2k, Discworld, Susan/Angua: I threw in the Susan/Angua prompt as an afterthought, not really expecting anyone to actually write Discworld, because, well, it's Discworld. And then there was this story, with footnotes and humour, and really, what more could a girl ask for?

Wolf language was not well suited to asking the big existential questions but the shade of Sergeant Angua managed to growl something approximate to, 'Am I dead?'

The figure pushed its hood back revealing the face of Young Sam's governess, Susan, her hair still in a sensible governess-like bun(3). She lifted up a lifetimer, 'MAYBE. IT'S ALL A BIT QUANTUM THESE DAYS.'

Susan! And Angua! With bonus Death of Rats! If you haven't read this story yet, go at once, and leave the author some lovely feedback.

* What I Wore To The Revolution by [personal profile] jae_w Devil Wears Prada, Emily/Andy: Utterly, utterly perfect Emily voice. Utterly.

Emily was not an unreasonable woman.

The point of a junior assistant, as Emily had been led to understand, was that she should actually help the senior assistant, should bear some of the burden of living up to Miranda Priestley's standards. When she had been the junior assistant, Emily firmly believed, she had been a lifesaver. On one memorable occasion, she had even been called that – a lifesaver. At the very least, she had followed the professional code of all lifesavers: first, do no harm. Emily had done no harm. She had always strived to make the senior assistant's life easier, and if her hard work and effort had, through no fault of her own, happened to emphasize her own competence and fitness to take on the senior assistant position, that was just a happy coincidence. Whatever Emily had now, she had earned.

What she had not earned, she was sure, was Andrea.

* Whore (Standard's Not My Native Tongue Megamix) by [community profile] zvi_likes_tv, ST: AOS, Gaila (Gaila/Uhura): Gaila and sex and cultural differences. I love, love, love how this story takes the short original, fleshes it out and gives us this wonderful look at Gaila. Remix of the best kind.

* Adventures in the Bad Green Apple: Blood for a Bauble by [personal profile] jemandhyel, Wicked, Glinda/Elphaba: This one's a WIP, but if you're into Wicked, there's no excuse for not following this. In a slightly different Oz, Elphaba Thropp is a bitter green detective and Glinda Arduenna is her socialite client, and it's awesome.
swatkat: knight - er, morgana - in shining underwear (cuddy)
The First Time by [livejournal.com profile] thinkpink20, House/Wilson/Cuddy: Good OT3 is a rare thing in fandom, and this one has it all: funny dialogue, Wilson worrying about his choice of underwear, ridiculously hot sex, Wilson being plotty and generally awesome. I particularly love that it's Wilson's idea, because as far as I'm concerned with this ship, it's always Wilson's idea. Go read, and praise the author!

Forty-One by [livejournal.com profile] chainofclovers, Sister James/Sister Aloysius, from the movie Doubt: Yes, it's femslash with nuns. Well, as femslashy as nuns can be. I love Sister James' relationship with Sister Aloysius here, and the way [livejournal.com profile] chainofclovers captures the tone of the movie. Let me quote the summary:
Sister James gives up snacking and gossip for Lent; Sister Aloysius gives up Sister James.
Just fabulous.

All the Purim ficlets are up! For Day 2 I received: Wake Up, which is an adorable Gwen and Morgana fic (along with a lovely banner that is mine, mine alone).

For Day 3 I received: The New World, featuring Cuddy and Rachel, and I nearly died of the cuteness involved here. DIED, I tell you.

Go forth, and shower them with love.

+ First, a tale a woe. My laptop's display died and the laptop has been retired hurt since Friday. The technician promises that I'll have it back tonight (and he's an acquaintance, so I can trust him). It will cost me a rather hefty amount, but I really don't care at this point. I want it back!

And if that was not enough, my phone had to be reformatted yesterday, and I had to survive an ENTIRE DAY using someone else's spare handset! It was deeply distressing.

(It is possible that I have an unhealthy attachment to these electronic devices. Ahem.)

ETA: Today's Dilbert strip read my mind.

+ But meanwhile! [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts is live! And my author wrote me a wonderful BSG story featuring Laura and Hera! And made me shiny icons! The Next Step. You must read it at once. *g*

+ A Voice in Ramah (Welcome to Holland) by [livejournal.com profile] ignazwisdom: Cuddy makes a difficult, life-altering choice. The entire thing is *heartbreaking* and beautifully in character. Read it now!
swatkat: knight - er, morgana - in shining underwear (Default)
Today's xkcd made me cry and want to go home. It's cold and stupid and I *hate* everything. /tantrum

And then when you need a pick-up, read this: Still He Offers the Sea Shell by [livejournal.com profile] chash, Anne of Green Gables college!AU, Anne/Gilbert. No, really. Anne's special brand of crazy translates very well into a modern setting, and this is just lovely. ♥

Here. Something to distract you from financial gloom and doom, flist. Stop staring at the plummetting stocks, it's not healthy.

Also a rec: Rest Stop by [livejournal.com profile] magical24: I don't read a lot of AUs in this fandom, but I was intrigued by a rec in [livejournal.com profile] house_cuddy and so I followed the link. I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed. It features a House who dropped out of medical school after his incident in Hopkins, opting to join Dylan Crandall's band instead. The pairing is House/Cuddy, but I wouldn't really call it a ship fic - it's more of a House AU, with House/Cuddy playing an important role in House's journey. I was particularly enchanted by this universe's Cuddy, and the way the author portrays the class issues in House and Cuddy's relationship. There's also a nice cameo by Wilson. I found the end a bit abrupt, to be honest, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the universe. If you're in the mood for a long, well-written AU, you might want to give this a try.

This day in shopping: Waists are lower. Florals with random sparkly things thrown in here and there are in. Some designer thought hoods with ethnic tops (sleeveless, too) would be a really bright idea. Miranda Priestley would NOT be pleased.

Yes, this is what I did all day. Everytime I'm home, my mother likes to drag us somewhere, generally using this opportunity (3 against 1) to buy my father some clothes. Then I came home and watched Three Stories, which is still awesome. The Sister appears to have become a true House/Cuddy shipper, because she keeps on making these flaily noises when they're on-screen (the same noises I make whenever Cuddy is on-screen) and says things like "I like Cuddy more. I mean, I'm not saying I don't like Stacy, but she can't come back!"

How was your Sunday?

Rec: Bricks and Beams by [livejournal.com profile] entropy_comix, House/Iron Man x-over. House, Tony and Cuddy, with a bit of Tony/Cuddy. Hilarious, great voices and banter, and just generally shiny. Go read!
swatkat: knight - er, morgana - in shining underwear (Default)
I read a couple of fabulous essays on Narnia today. The first one was The Problem of Susan by [livejournal.com profile] truepenny, which is a reading of Narnia through Neil Gaiman's story, The Problem of Susan. I haven't read the story, but I kind of want to read it now, because it sounds wonderful and thought-provoking, as is the essay. Lipstick on My Scholar, on the other hand, is a great *defence* of CSL (you heard that right). I don't buy into every argument of his, particularly where he cites Susan being courted by various suitors as an instance of Lewis' acceptance of adult, female sexuality, but it's well-written nonetheless.

The discussion in [livejournal.com profile] truepenny's journal also made me go and re-read a couple of wonderful stories, The Ivory Horn by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls, a His Dark Materials/Narnia x-over from this years Yuletide (which just blew me away the first time I read it), and The Queen's Return by [livejournal.com profile] honorh. Both Susan-centric, both approaching the 'problem of Susan' in two different ways.

*

Speaking of Narnia, I forgot to mention that I saw Prince Caspian and loved it. I loved the changes they made, spoilers )

I also watched the BSG miniseries today, all of it, and how cute *were* these people back then? Also, it's interesting how hindsight makes me see these characters in a different way. I want to squish Tigh and throw things at Baltar, and the sheer AWESOMENESS of Laura Roslin makes me squee. This is not the reaction I had the first time, where I was mostly watching Kara and Adama and trying to absorb things; it took me quite a while to warm up to Laura, in fact.

*

Rec: deaths and resurrections of the cylon laura roslin by [livejournal.com profile] firenze083, Roslin (Adama/Roslin): This is a wonderful AU about the life and times of Laura Roslin, Cylon, with lovely little cameos by Athena and Bill. [livejournal.com profile] firenze083 takes us through Laura's journey to Cylonhood, and it's heart-breaking and wonderfully detailed.

+ I have a new journal header, in honour of the House season finale: [livejournal.com profile] swatkat24.

+ Here, have a couple of post-episode recs as well. Needless to say, they contain spoilers. you cant always get what you want )
