Errrr, actually, what they're doing is eliminating all grandfathered basic accounts and replacing them with something they will *call* basic accounts, but will no longer be ad-free.
See this post (http://community.livejournal.com/lj_2008/4376.html).
As someone with a grandfathered basic account, I'm going to be affected by this. *Sigh*
I mostly don't want people reading my journal, journal entries, or looking at my userinfo to be forced to see ads. I myself tend to boycott reading plus accounts except through my flist, because as far as I'm concerned, anyone who selects a plus account has demonstrated a rather obnoxious lack of consideration for her readers. But as several of the options being discussed would involve certain categories of people visiting my LJ being forced to see ads, it means if I keep my basic account, I'm going to become one of those obnoxious, inconsiderate people! Unless I cough up for a paid account. *Sigh*
So am I. Right now, I'm torn between coughing up for the paid account or putting up with the ads, because I still don't want to pay LJ any money. The new overlords, I have to admit, have so far done a better job of listening to people, but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm finding the new overlords fairly reasonable. While I'm not happy at the prospect of losing no-ad basic accounts, I'm impressed that they are at least communicating their thought process about it ahead of time.
If it was just an issue of *me* being forced to see ads, I'd go ahead and stick with basic, because, yeah, not quite ready to fork money over even to the new overlords. But if the option they settle on will result in anyone else seeing ads on any page connected with me, I'm going to have to switch to paid. At least the consolation is that I'll get more than six icons -- at the rate I'm collecting new fandoms and OTCs, six doesn't cover them anymore!
