Sometimes a Great Notion
Jan. 20th, 2009 10:02 amMY SHOW IS BACK.
* Ellen Tigh is the final Cylon? Wow. Admitted, she had been on top of my list post-4.10, but that doesn't change the sheer level of mindfrak that this revelation is. If it is indeed true.
* The very idea of a Tigh family reunion is deeply creepy. And awesome. But deeply creepy.
* But where was Caprica Six in this episode? Why was Caprica Six not in this episode?
* Kara burning her own pyre. That scene was incredibly powerful, as was the earlier scene with her discovery and her anguished 'What am I?' I think this scene is now a part of my top ten BSG scenes ever.
* But what *is* Kara?
* Anders was a rockstar in his previous life. I would find this more amusing if I found him a little more interesting.
* Roslin! Don't give up!
* I'm very proud of Lee in this episode. This, coming from me, is something.
* But here's the thing: Earth was colonized by the Thirteenth Tribe, who were Cylons. Who ran away from… humans? They were Cylon centurions who later developed their own breed of humanoid Cylons? Of whom the Final Five were a part? Which brings up the question, how many Cylon models were there on Earth? And how did they reach the Twelve Colonies?
* Dee's death. Yes, I had tears in my eyes. But I'm also angry, Ron Moore, because what the frakking frak? I'm tired of women dying so that the men who love them can react, I'm tired that women on this show dying so that the Adamas—who will cry at the drop a hat, anyway—can cry some more and be emo. Oh, and the fact that Dee was the only recurring non-Cylon character of colour? Makes it worse. Fail, show.
* ETA: Wikipedia tells me that the lyrics of 'Goodbye, Irene' are:
Sometimes I live in the country,
Sometimes I live in town,
Sometimes I have a great notion;
Jumpin' in into the river and drown
Very clever, show. Very clever.

Date: 2009-01-20 04:56 am (UTC)I adored this episode.
Dee: I'll agree with you that I'm really really tired of the 2nd layer of women characters being disposable. That said, I thought the idea of Dee - who has been such a central, stable character - that Dee found nuked!Earth too much to deal with - very powerful. And I can see potential ramifications of Dee's actions coming in further episodes - ramifications that wouldn't have happened had it not been Dee.
But, yes, to your main point. What purpose did Cally's death serve, other than to allow Tyrol to grieve?
` I loved Lee in this ep. But my poor, darling Lee - everyone just dumps on him and expects him to handle. "Take the ball" my ass, Papadama. Why is it OK for Laura to check out and leave it to Lee to manage?
` How much did I love the Lee/Kara scene.
` Kara. OMG Kara. My one true girlcrush (altho Laura is a closeclose 2nd). I thought her arc this ep was amazing. What IS Kara? She's not the girl that flew out with Lee in Maelstrom, that's for certain.
` As I can piece it together, when the 13 tribes had to leave Kobol (for reasons currently unclear), the 13th tribe - the Cylon tribe - went to Earth. Why did they feel it necessary to seperate from the human tribes? I don't know. They created a florishing society, and created (I think) the Centurions as *their* Cylon servants. Then there was a nuclear holocaust. Was it by the Centurions? Was it a Cylon Civil War? Or was it humans? All this has happened before and all this will happen again.

Date: 2009-01-20 05:32 am (UTC)I will miss these people and their world, though.

How many women have died in this season now? Kendra (if you count Razor, and I will). Cally. Mathias. Barolay. Natalie, if we're counting Cylons. And how many men died? One - whatshisname pilot in 'The Hub'.
Not good enough.
I get the thematic *why* of her death (though I felt it was a bit rushed), I get that. But, not good enough.
How much did I love the Lee/Kara scene.
I kind of liked it as well. Which is saying something. *G*
` I loved Lee in this ep. But my poor, darling Lee - everyone just dumps on him and expects him to handle.
But that's *what* makes it awesome! He's taking responsibility! People lump things on him because he can be depended upon! I like him better this way, actually.
But if the 13th Tribe were Cylons, what happened to the fact that humans created Cylons? Or so we knew?

Date: 2009-01-20 05:44 am (UTC)Well, humans created cylons in the 12 colonies. But it's not necessarily the only time Cylons have ever been created. Perhaps?

Date: 2009-01-20 05:27 am (UTC)I have to run off and teach, but THIS. YES. I can understand the character arc impact - someone who has just had their entire world shattered and who feels that this is the only way out - but no, we do not turn the entire female cast into Evil, Dead, or Cylon.

Date: 2009-01-20 05:53 am (UTC)Exactly. Death count this season? Kendra. Cally. Mathias. Barolay. Now Dee. And male death count this season? ONE, if I recall correctly. This is getting to be Angel S5 level of ridiculous. As I told

Date: 2009-01-20 05:30 am (UTC)Word on Dee. Unless there's some further development, I think it was a cheap shot what they did with her.
As for all the other revelations...I think they raise a lot more questions than they answer. I don't think anything is settled yet, and that includes Ellen Tigh (as much as I want her back, because Ellen/Saul really is my OTP!!).
I've never been much of a Lee fan, but...I like him a LOT better with longer hair. What a difference that makes!
I like that Leoben is freaked out and terrified by Kara. But then I've always kind of had a thing for Kara/Leoben anyway.

Date: 2009-01-20 05:48 am (UTC)Cheap shot *is* the word for what this is. Because they got me to cry, but for what? I suppose there could be some further development, because Adama in the morgue with her body parallels Adama with Boomer and Adama's tears after Maelstrom, and both Kara and Boomer 'died' and resurrected. And Anastasia means 'resurrection' and Dualla could refer to some sort of duality... Hmm. I'm not going to hope, though.
I like him a LOT better with longer hair.
I hated his hair in the last couple of eps, but I loved it here. Absence makes the heart grow fonder?
I like that Leoben is freaked out and terrified by Kara. But then I've always kind of had a thing for Kara/Leoben anyway.
I liked the freaking out part. But no Kara/Leoben no. Keep him *away* from her.
