Today I spent a significant amount of time entertaining myself with this. While in the library. In my defence, there's only so much you can read about the 'naturally weak disposition of the Asiatic' and why the British Empire is Good For India before your eyes glaze over.

Holmes/Watson-->Kirk/Spock -->[insert various big boyslash fandoms like The Professionals, Highlander, due South, The Sentinel, etc. that were before my fannish time and I know little about]-->(Wesley/Gunn?)-->Remus/Sirius-->House/Wilson-->McKay/Sheppard-->Merlin/Arthur-->Kirk/Spock (reboot)--> [Holmes/Watson reboot??]-->???

Jack/Ianto should ideally be on this list, but I'm not sure if it qualifies on account of being canon.

Meanwhile, there's the hate/love pairings: Spike/Xander||Angel/Spike-->Harry/Draco||Harry/Snape (Snape/Lupin to a certain extent). Mulder/Krycek might be on this list, but I don't know how big it was (how big was it?). Also, does Clark/Lex belong on this list or the buddy pairings list?

Sam/Dean comes along (almost) the same time as McShep, but it probably has to stand alone, because I don't think there is any other incest pairing as big as Sam/Dean.

Meanwhile, RPS could have its own list. You could start with something like John/Paul, perhaps. In my own fannish life I've witnessed: Popslash-->LOTRips-->Bandom-->J2/AI-->AI8/ST RPS.

Then I tried to do something similar with het ships, but it doesn't really work, although there is some Mulder/Scully-->Spike/Buffy-->Kara/Lee spillover. A lot of the Mulder/Scully shippers are boyslashers.

(Girlslashers just ship whatever little they get.)

Clearly I spend way too much time thinking about fandom.

Judging from canon, Clark/Lex belongs under enemy pairings, because even in the early seasons when the two weren't enemeies, the tension between them had more of an air of creepy obsession than of camaraderie. On the other hand, there's no shortage of fic that focuses on their close friendship rather than the rift, and I think a lot of people who slash those two are also partial to buddy pairings. *shrug*

So true, so very true. I get the feeling that there are more hate/love pairings, though, given how little value female friendship is given in many works ("What do you mean, 'We should have more female characters than just the Good Girl and the Bad Girl'?"). It must vary by genre, of course.
