I have NO idea why they're so card-happy this year! In the second half of the Germany-Serbia game, players were visibly flinching every time they made physical contact or tackled someone. And what's up with your team and the red cards?
I dunno. Apparently they're not supposed to have arms, or something. *shrugs*
Considering how they lost to Italy last World Cup, it's getting hard to work up any excitement. It'd be different if they lost in a more genuine way but this is just painful.
From my observer's POV, even the lack of Cahill's card wouldn't have saved the Germany game (he deserved a yellow, IMO, no way was it a red card), but his presence could have made a difference in yesterday's game. It was impressive that they pulled through even with ten men. What was really disappointing about yesterday's match was the way both teams seemed to sort of lose their way once they made it near the opponent's box, like they forgot what they were supposed to do with the ball or something.
The way the group is now, though, Australia still has a chance if they defeat Serbia, right? :D
It was definitely a penalty, and maybe a yellow card (biased, who me? ;).
Not sure what the chances of them progressing are, the permutations are crazy complicated. I think they have to beat Serbia by 4 goals, and Germany have to lose, so kinda a snowballs chance, really.
I was thinking about the card-happy thing this morning too, and then my local sports station informed me that thus far, this World Cup has the lowest number of cards issued in the last 16 years. Huh.
