Maybe it's because I've been in a not-so-nice mood lately, and as a result being harsh to all my characters, but the more I think, the more it occurs to me that Michael, of all the characters in the 'verse, is the one who acts most out of selfish considerations. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it's very far away from the fanon image of pure!saint!fallenherowithagoldenheart!Michael.

Ah. Pre-emptive commenting! That is one of those elements of fanon I've never quite gotten, as Michael strikes me as quite 1) full of himself, and 2) self-interested - very nearly from the get go. While I think he attempted to shape other people's opinion of him to achieve his ends, if they didn't *like* him - he genuinely didn't care (with the unexpected exception of Nikita - and so the plot rolled on...). Not many people can really say that.

Not only does he not care about other people's opinions, he also doesn't *care* about terrorism, about the victims of terrorism the way Nikita does - and he never will. Michael is a very perceptive guy, but he's also not much of an empath.

I also don't quite get the Undeserving thing that's so popular in fanfiction. Sure, there's a self-flagellating streak in Michael, but I always saw him as quite eager to cling to the things he does want.

Ah, but if he's undeserving (or unfairly deprived), that just makes him every so much more special. Not only is he handsome and skilled and powerful, but he's humble and golly, no one understands him. The undeserving thing makes him boyfriend material.

I spent the better part of the week at a conference where 'marketing to young people' was one of the points of discussion. I have to say your description of Michael pretty much fits the description of 'cool'. Confident, doesn't care what other people think and doesn't change according to other people's opinion, sure of self. Maybe fanfic writers like cool? ;)
