Internet is dead. Computer is dying. Not a problem, since this is the Month of Freedom. All I can say is it better get fixed before the end of this month.

Also, all the tickets for PoA are booked for about a week or so. Within a day. This sucks.

[livejournal.com profile] msgenevieve and [livejournal.com profile] delle, I finished Outlander. It *is* a good book, and it would be unfair to call it a romance novel. I particularly enjoyed Gabaldon's style. She writes with a sense of humour, which is also a good thing. The characters are very well portrayed and likeable - I enjoyed the Claire-Jamie interactions very much. I don't quite get the "OMG teh Jamie!" reactions, though. *g*

I'm not sure if I want to read the sequels, but this was a good book. Thanks for the rec.

Oh, I'm glad you liked it.

I'd agree with you - the book was originally published and marketed as a 'romance novel', altho Diana went out of her way to shatter certain romance conventions (he's the virgin, she's older than him). The later novels are less and less in the romance genre, even tenuously. I've read that it's a source of great frustration to Diana that her books are still shelved in the romance section; she'd rather see them in the general fiction catagory. But once a book or author has been "redtagged" (if you will?), I guess it's really hard to get booksellers to change. [profile] shanola22 would know more about it, if you're really really interested.

I'd recommend the series. But they vary in my liking; the next one, "Dragonfly in Amber" is probably my least favorite of the series. Although it does introduce *my* sweetie of the series, Roger Mackenzie Wakefield. Jamie all good, but me, I'm a Roger girl.

Here's Diana's homepage (http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~gatti/gabaldon/gabaldon.html), if you're ever so inclined.

Thanks for the link

It *was* in the general fiction category in the bookshop, so that's good news. *g*

I'm not sure about the sequels, simply because sequels tend to suck and ruin my impression about the first book. I liked Claire very much (predictable, aren't I?), and I would like to keep that impression of hers. Of course, I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep this up - I liked her style very much, and I may crack soon enough and get myself another one.

Oh, if that's the concern: I can guarantee you that the sequels are equally good. They're actually not "sequels" per se; it's one long story and she's always envisioned it as a several-book-series (much like Harry Potter).

I don't like Dragonfly in Amber as well, didn't care for Voyager quite as much as Outlander [but better than Dragonfly], loved Drums of Autumn, and liked The Fiery Cross. So I have two "loves", two "likes" and one "not quite as much".

I'm trying very hard not to spoil Dragonfly by telling you what bothered me so much... you should read it and then we can compare and contrast our opinions! (am taking lessons for [personal profile] nestra, the Great Enabler here)

You know, I really don't mind spoilers. At all. [/spoiler queen]

Well, Claire doesn't become a Mary Sue, if that's what you're worried about. The rest of the books are just as enjoyable, although like [livejournal.com profile] delle I have my favourites amongst them. I absolutely adore the first two, love the third and fourth, and like the fifth. *g*

No worries there. In fact, I would've read it again if Sister hadn't snatched it away the moment I left it lying uguarded. So I'm just reading Good Omens instead. (it's a hoot. have you read it?)

I don't her to become a Mary Sue, but neither do I want her to become boring. But I'll take yours and [livejournal.com profile] delle's word for it. *g*

PoA

Also, all the tickets for PoA are booked for about a week or so. Within a day. This sucks.

My husband and I are going to see it in Gold Class here. We had been given two vouchers as a gift a few months ago, and I was determined to save them for PoA. This means only 20 people per session, your own reclining armchair, gourmet food and drink should you wish to purchase it, and no one under 18.

Bliss.

Getting through to make the booking for Gold Class was the big hurdle, however. Tickets went on sale on Friday morning at 8:30am, and it took me until 9:40am to get through. Thank God for my Harry Potter obsessed trainee, lol! Not only have she and I spent the last two weeks dicussing the various ships and websites (I have yet to out myself as a fan fic writer/reader, however), she helped me book the tickets. Friday morning, she and I took it in turns to ring the booking office using the spare switchboard, my Gold Class vouchers clutched in our hands, giving each other the thumbs down every time we got the busy signal. When I finally got through, we did a little dance around my desk. All part of her training, of course. And when her mother rang an hour later to say that she'd bought *her* tickets, we did another little dance.

There was a 30 minute "Making of PoA" on TV today, which I taped and have already watched twice. I am *so* ready to see this movie that it's worrying me.

So, did you end up booking tickets? When are you seeing it? We're going on Monday 14th, which means I'll spend the weekend, wishing I was at the local IMAX watching it with everyone else. LOL!

Oh

She really sounds lovely. Maybe you can finally come out of the closet? Heh.

I'll try again tomorrow - hopefully I'll be able to get the tickets this time. I can't bear to read all the spoilers and reviews any more - not because I mind getting spoiled, but because it makes me want to cry, lol! I contented myself yesterday (the day I'd originally planned to watch PoA) by watching a rather fluffy chick flick instead. *g*

so I'm the odd one out in the family right now. But Iz will happily see it more than once, so I'll get there soon.

Oh do!
