I hear you on writing for a recipient--it can be intimidating--but it's also part of the challenge's appeal, for me. I try to figure out the sorts of things the person is into by stalking their journal and then write something along those lines. Um, except when a plotbunny hijacks me and I write...something else. *grin*

You mean outside of HP? I always took "beyond the veil" to mean death, and a play on words in regard to life being "a vale of tears".

Ah! Well, given JKR's Christianity, beyond the veil is death, which is actually a lovely place where Sirius hangs out with James and Lily, drinking firewhisky and hot chocolate and playing tennis, until Remus joins him, after which they have a lot of hot sex, occasionally involving Tonks. *nod*
