Meanwhile, TODAY IS THE DAY, flist. THE WORLD CUP IS HERE! I am jubilant, and also sad, because this is the first time in my life that I won't be able to follow it the way I should, being away from home and Education keeping me away from everything. And yes, it is kind of a big deal to me, nevermind that my country sucks at football - I was born in a world cup year, and my father will happily tell you stories about tiny me watching football with him. BUT ANYWAY. ARE YOU WATCHING? IS YOUR TEAM PLAYING? WHO ARE YOU SUPPORTING? HOW AWESOME IS THE THEME SONG? TELL MEEEE!

Oh God, the world cup! I'm totally ignoring it! I even ignored it four years ago, when it was in Germany and I was socially obliged to be interested. IIRC, I saw only three games, none of them by choice, only because I was in company with people who were watching.

Hurrah, World Cup! Scotland aren't in it, which is probably for the best, that'd just be embarrassing for all of us. In previous years I have taken part in the traditional Scottish pastime of supporting whoever England are playing. But this year I have decided that would be childish and nationalistic (anyway, they're not going to win so there's nothing to be frightened of ;-))

So, I shall be supporting Portugal, because they are who I got in the office sweepstake, yes.

Shh, don't tell anyone, but your national pastime is also my not-so-secret pastime. It's just that their 'we shall win this year, no really, this is our year, yes it is... whoops' thing every year gets on my nerves. Childish, what?

Portugal! Well, I'm not sure if they'll actually win? But Christiano Ronaldo is very pretty.

Brazil is definitely playing! Though maybe not today I don't actually watch the games. *laughs* I should actually take photos of the advertisements/memorabilia from around the city, come to think of it!

I always like to think of myself as fairly cosmopolitan, but this sort of thing reveals how American I really am: I didn't realize it was the World Cup until you mentioned it! (I don't follow US sports either, if that makes up for it?)

I will also not be able to follow the World Cup, I think, which is sad-making! Uh, the US is in it, and I will be cheering for them, but they're also the US and we'll be lucky to make it to the quarterfinals, I think.

You should make it to the second round, though I admit I don't know much about Algeria or Slovenia's performances of late. I'll be watching the England match tomorrow! Well, hopefully. At least one half.
